Kristin Hering, 57, visited a QUICKmed urgent care center in Medina for a mouth-related issue. Upon arrival, she was handed a three-page questionnaire by the receptionist, which she later realized was geared towards mental health assessment.
"I feel like I was tricked. That's how I can describe it," Hering said. "I went in for a physical issue, and suddenly, I'm being charged for a psychological test."
Hering's concern deepened when she received the bill. QUICKmed charged her for the psychological test, despite her not recalling any discussion about mental health during her visit. She felt that the test was unnecessary and irrelevant to her primary medical concern.
"I don't remember the doctor even mentioning mental health. I was there for a different reason entirely," she explained.

QUICKmed's Response: 'Optional' Questionnaires
News 5 Investigators reached out to QUICKmed, who provided a response stating that mental health screening is a routine part of urgent care visits and is optional. They emphasized that no patient is mandated to undergo the screening to receive treatment. However, depending on the scoring and diagnosis, interventional discussions and potential referrals to mental health providers may be warranted.
Hering, however, maintains that she was never informed that the questionnaire was optional, and the physician's notes indicated that she was at no/low risk.
"It feels like they're finding ways to squeeze more money out of patients," she said.
Are Other Facilities Following Suit?
News 5 investigated whether similar practices are occurring at other medical facilities. They contacted major healthcare providers in the area, and the responses were varied. Summa Health stated that they do not charge for scoring questionnaires like Hering's. Cleveland Clinic said they were looking into their billing practices, but News 5 did not receive a response. MetroHealth requested more information but did not provide any further updates. University Hospitals ignored multiple emails.
Hering's story serves as a cautionary tale, urging patients to be proactive in understanding the potential charges they may face and to carefully review their bills.
"In these times of inflation, when many of us are living paycheck to paycheck, it's important to be aware of these practices. It's a serious issue," Hering emphasized.
