Development of an Open-Source Thermal Image Processing Software for Improving Irrigation Management in Potato Crops (Solanum tuberosum L.)

Accurate determination of plant water status is mandatory to optimize irrigation scheduling and thus maximize yield. Infrared thermography (IRT) can be used as a proxy for detecting stomatal closure as a measure of plant water stress. In this study, an open-source software (Thermal Image Processor (TIPCIP)) that includes image processing techniques such as thermal-visible image segmentation and morphological operations was developed to estimate the crop water stress index (CWSI) in potato crops. Results were compared to the CWSI derived from thermocouples where a high correlation was found ( r P e a r s o n = 0.84). Unraveling Ecophysiological Mechanisms in Potatoes under Different Irrigation Methods: A Preliminary Field Evaluation

Potatoes—a global food security and staple crop—is threatened by dry spells in drought-prone areas. The use of physiological thresholds to save water while maintaining a reasonable tuber yield has been proposed, but their effects on physiological performances and usefulness under different irrigation methods are yet to be evaluated. In this study, photosynthetic traits were monitored to assess the effect of water restriction and rewatering under drip (DI) and furrow (FI) irrigations. The treatments consisted of two maximum light-saturated stomatal conductance (g s _ m a x ) irrigation thresholds (T2: 0.15 and T3: 0.05 mol H 2 O m − 2 s − 1 ) compared with a fully irrigated control (g s _ m a x > 0.3 mol H 2 O m − 2 s − 1 ). DI used less water than FI but promoted early senescence and low percentage of maximum assimilation rate (PMA) at late developmental stages. Canopy temperature (CT) as a surrogate of stomatal conductance has been highlighted as an essential physiological indicator for optimizing irrigation timing in potatoes. However, assessing how this trait could help improve yield prediction will help develop future decision support tools. In this study, the incorporation of CT minus air temperature (dT) in a simple ecophysiological model was analyzed in three trials between 2017 and 2018, testing three water treatments under drip (DI) and furrow (FI) irrigations. Drought stress affects physiological parameters but not tuber yield in three Andean potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars

This study evaluated the effect of water deficit on the physiological response and yield of three Andean potato cultivars. Leaf water potential (Ψw), soil matric potential (SMP), photosynthesis (A), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E), intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi), leaf temperature (LT), chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, chlorophyll (Chl), carotenoids (Car), electrolyte leakage (EL), growth and yield (Y). Parameters were determined in well-watered (WW) and drought-stressed (DS) plants. The three DS cultivars showed a decrease in leaf from the first day of treatment and reached values close to -2.00 MPa 4 days after treatment (DAT) for the Diacol Capiro (DC) cultivar, 5 DAT for the Pastusa Suprema (PS) cultivar and 6 DAT for the Esmeralda (Es) cultivar. Comparing canopy temperature and leaf water potential as irrigation scheduling criteria of potato in water-saving irrigation strategies

Irrigation scheduling is important in irrigation water management. In this study, full (FI),deficit (DI) and partial root drying (PRD) irrigation strategies were applied in Agria and Ramospotato cultivars. Canopy temperature (CT) and leaf water potential (LWP) were assessed as thepotential tools for irrigation scheduling during the vegetative and productive growth stages.LWP varied between ca. -1.4 and -1.6 MPa and was not significantly different between FI, DIand PRD irrigation treatments. The LWP and CT values were not significant between the twopotato cultivars during the measurements, but CT was frequently significant between theirrigation treatments such that the PRD treatments were significantly 5 and 2 oC warmer than FIand DI treatments, respectively.
