CLIMAX, MINN. – Brian Evenson has long lived with outsiders' suspicions that he murdered a woman he loved ― and has even on occasion wondered himself if he strangled her in the middle of the night, drove home and then forgot about it.

In the 40 years since Nancy Daugherty, a 38-year-old mother and nursing home aide, was killed in her Chisholm, Minn., home, investigators have interviewed Evenson a dozen times. They collected his DNA, the shirt he wore the last time he saw her, a list of places he left his fingerprints in her home. He was among the last to see her alive. He was the one who touched her cold, stiff fingers the next day and knew she was dead.

Stock market today: Asian shares mostly higher after rebound on Wall St

  • By ELAINE KURTENBACH - AP Business Writer

Asian shares are mostly higher after U.S. stocks bounced back from Wall Street’s worst day since April to finish higher for the week. Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped but other benchmarks advanced. Taiwan led the gains, with heavy buying of computer chip-related shares pushing the Taiex up 1.3% to a fresh record. Oil prices also rose. On Friday, the S&P 500 gained 0.7% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by less than 0.1%. The Nasdaq composite gained 1.1% to top its all-time high set earlier this week. Nvidia climbed again following its blowout profit report earlier this week to help push the market higher.

Australia plans to send aid to Papua New Guinea as rain raises safety fears at deadly landslide site

  • By ROD McGUIRK - Associated Press

Australia is preparing to send aircraft and other equipment to help at the site of the deadly landslide in Papua New Guinea as rain in the South Pacific nation’s mountainous interior is raising fears that the tons of rubble that buried hundreds of villagers will become dangerously unstable. Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said Monday his officials have been talking with their Papua New Guinea counterparts since Friday when a mountainside collapsed on Yambali village in Enga province, which the U.N. estimates killed 670 people. The remains of only six people have been recovered so far. Heavy rain fell for two hours overnight in the provincial capital of Wabag, 35 miles from the devastated village. Communications with the village are limited.

Libertarians nominate Chase Oliver for president, spurning both Trump and Kennedy

  • AP

The Libertarian Party has nominated party activist Chase Oliver for president. The third party rejected former President Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. after they each spoke at the party’s convention. Third parties have rarely been competitive in U.S. presidential elections and the Libertarian candidate four years ago won 1% of the vote. Trump appeared Saturday night in Washington at the convention to give a speech that was repeatedly booed by many in the room. It did not pay off with the endorsem*nt he requested, though his Republican allies on Sunday praised him for choosing to go before an unfriendly crowd.

Cyclone floods coastal villages and cuts power in Bangladesh, where 800,000 had evacuated

  • AP

A cyclone has flooded villages and left hundreds of thousands of people without power after making landfall overnight along the coasts of Bangladesh and India’s West Bengal state. Nearly 800,000 residents had evacuated vulnerable areas of Bangladesh's coast ahead of Cyclone Remal. TV stations reported dozens of villages were flooded as the storm surge damaged and washed away flood protection embankments. Authorities gave no casualty figures yet, but local media reported two deaths. Indian forecasters had said Remal could have winds up to 75 mph. A 3-foot storm surge and moderate to heavy rainfall also were forecast. Airports and schools in the area were closed Monday and seaports suspended operations.

Nigeria is emerging as a critical mineral hub. The government is cracking down on illegal operations

  • By TAIWO ADEBAYO - Associated Press

Nigeria’s government is cracking down on illegal mining, making dozens of arrests of unlicensed miners since April for allegedly stealing the country’s lithium, a critical mineral used in batteries for electric vehicles, smartphones and power systems. The recent arrests come as Nigeria seeks to regulate its mining operations of critical minerals, curb illegal activity and better benefit from its mineral resources. Illegal mines are rife in the country’s fledging industry as corruption among regulatory officials is common and the mineral deposits are located in remote areas with minimal government presence. Officials say profits from illicit mining practices has helped arm militia groups in the north of the county.

Arrow McLaren hopes to build momentum after posting strong performance at Indianapolis 500

  • By MICHAEL MAROT - AP Sports Writer

Arrow McLaren started this month seeking a fresh start. The team's program certainly appears to be back on track after Sunday's strong showing at the Indianapolis 500. Pato O’Ward and Alexander Rossi each led 12 laps and were fighting for the lead until the end. O'Ward came within two turns of of capturing his first win on the Brickyard’s 2.5-mile oval. Kyle Larson might have finished in the top five if not for a speeding violation on pit row. Even Callum Ilott was forced to start from the back of the field and overcame a pit row collision to finish 11th. It could be enough to give the team some momentum for the final 12 IndyCar races.

Volunteers starter Payton Gottshall (20-5) struck out the first two batters she faced before Kenleigh Cahalan singled to left. Gottshall hit Jenna Johnson and Marlie Giles on back-to-back pitches to load the bases. Valentine sent a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left field for a 4-0 lead. It was only the fourth home run for the .216 hitter who had 15 RBIs in 41 games. That was plenty for Briski (10-5), a freshman, who allowed a double, a single and a walk with four strikeouts through six innings.
