Experience the Unique Floating Sauna on Lake Sambell (2025)

A bold new venture is set to revolutionize relaxation in the North East, and it's already creating quite a buzz! Michael Patterson, a local businessman from Beechworth, has embarked on a unique journey to bring a Scandinavian-inspired floating sauna to Lake Sambell, and the response has been nothing short of remarkable. With over 80 bookings secured, this innovative project is proving to be a hit, but it hasn't been an easy road.

Patterson shares his excitement about the soft launch on October 16th, followed by the official opening on October 17th, which saw 18 eager customers booked for the very next day. He highlights the challenges he faced, navigating through various hoops to make his dream a reality. Despite the obstacles, Patterson's determination paid off, and now, with a team of three staff members, including himself, the sauna is ready to welcome visitors.

But here's where it gets interesting... Patterson's inspiration for this venture stems from a floating sauna in Tasmania, which his business partner, Andrew Cairns, had a hand in constructing. Recognizing the appeal of such an experience, Patterson saw an opportunity to bring a similar concept to the North East, leveraging the region's strategic location near Wangaratta, Albury, and Melbourne airport.

"Beechworth has that small-town charm, yet it's easily accessible," Patterson explains. "It's about creating a community-centric experience, and that's exactly what we aim to achieve with this sauna."

However, not everyone shared Patterson's vision. Some locals had concerns, believing the structure would become a party pontoon. Patterson clarifies, "It's a misunderstanding. Saunas and alcohol don't mix! We want to offer a unique, healthy experience, not a party venue."

And this is the part most people miss... Patterson emphasizes the therapeutic benefits of the sauna. "It's not just about relaxation; it's about contrast therapy. Alternating between hot and cold temperatures stimulates circulation and offers numerous health advantages."

The sauna, which operates from 8 am to 9 pm, can accommodate up to six people, with five being the ideal number. Patterson suggests, "Imagine spending time in the sauna, then plunging into the refreshing cold waters of Lake Sambell. It's an invigorating experience!"

The official launch was a momentous occasion, attended by Bess Nolan-Cook, CEO of Tourism North East, and Bernard Gaffney, former deputy mayor of Indigo Shire. Gaffney, a staunch supporter of the project since its inception in 2023, believes it will be a game-changer for the region. "This floating sauna is a testament to the power of vision and initiative. It's a unique offering, and I have no doubt it will thrive, benefiting not just Beechworth but the entire Indigo Shire."

The sauna's construction showcases sustainability, utilizing hardwood and solar panels for lighting, making it completely off-grid. This eco-friendly approach adds to the overall appeal and aligns with the community's values.

So, is this floating sauna a brilliant innovation or a controversial addition to the North East? What are your thoughts? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments below!
