24 a EL PASO HERALD-POST Candidates Mix It Up In N. M. Campaign ASSOCIATED PRESS Republican and Democratic dates swapped blows as the New Mexico political campaign hit the home stretch. Republicans Edwin L. Mechem and Steiner Mason turned their guns on Democrat John E.
Miles, who opposes Mechem for the governorship. U. S. Representative Antonio M. Fernandez loosed the heaviest thrust of his campaign against Mason.
Fernandez is the Democratic ingress. The fourth congressional cumbent seeking re-election to didate is Democratic John J. Dempsey. Criticises Personal Attacks Mills last criticized what he said were "personal attacks" made by the Republicans during the campaign. Other developments: 1.
U. S. Attorney Everett M. Grantham replied to a Republican query that any complaints of alleged violations of the Federal Election Code will be "carefully investigated regardless of the source from which they come." 2. State Democratic Chairman H.
R. Rodgers issued a statement saying "every faction within the ranks of the Democratic Party of Bernalillo County is supporting E. Miles and the entire Democratic ticket." Hits Whispering Campaign 3. U. S.
Senator Dennis Chavez condemned the Bernalillo County party leadership, named five SOcalled "leeches and barnacles" on the state payroll in Bernalillo County and announced his main campaign speech will be delivered Sunday "at a meeting of my own." 4. A wave of indignation arose in Democratic circles over rumors which swept Albuquerque and Santa Fe yesterday that Miles had been ill in Santa Fe. Miles struck, in a statement from party headquarters, at what he called "a low and underhanded" whispering campaign. Grounds for the rumors concernIng Miles' health could be pinned down. The candidate himself attended two rallies at Chama and Texas Demos Give $108,700 to Party -Pest Washington Bureau WASHINGTON, Nov.
the Democratic National Committee Democrats have contributed uto about nine times what Texas Republicans have given to GOP headquarters since June of this election year. This is shown in lists of contributors the two big national party headquarters have filed with the clerk of the U. S. House of Representatives, as required by the Corrupt Practices Act. $12,797 from GOP Democratic headquarters reported that Texans contributed 700 between June and October.
Over the same period, Republican headquarters reported that Texans had contributed $12,797. Democrats only contributions in excess of $100; the GOP lists them all. The big difference lies in the $100,000 raised for Democratic National headquarters by the Jefferson -Jackson Day dinners in Texas. This was contributed through Tom Miller, of Austin. The party lists show a number of brewery officials contributed to the Democratic political fund, and the largest single contribution to either party from an individual Texan was $5000 by Democratic National Committeeman Wright Morrow of Houston.
Republicans got most of their money from Dallas and San Antonio. A scattering of doctors contributed to the GOP campaign fund. Flays Political Appointment Miles will spend today and tomorrow Albuquerque, Sunday in EsIn' panola and Santa Fe and return to Albuquerque Monday. Mechem spoke at Los Alamos last night and planned to return to Albuquerque today. In a statement from GOP state headquarters today, Mechem said employment of Lloyd Miles by the State Corporation Commission was an example of "political influence at its worst." "Before Mr. Miles' son was hired, there was no statistician employed on the payroll," the GOP candidate asserted. "And when Lloyd Miles left for another state job, a the job classification of 'statistician' was abolished." Attacks Miles' Record Mason said "for more than onethird of the roll calls in the House of Representatives in the 1950 session, Miles is not recorded as voling On important national legislation, New Mexico lost its voice in the council of states.
It was as if the sovereign state of New Mexico were outside of the union. Thanks to Miles' no-vote record, New Mexico was an absentee state one-third of the time." Fernandez took sharp issue with Mason's stand on foreign affairs in a talk last night. Referring to what he said was Mason's opposition to portions of the foreign aid program and Marshall Plan, Fernandez said: "May I say that if the good people of the state in their wisdom desire to select a Republican to fill my place in Congress, then, in the interests of peace, send Jose E. along with Governor John J. Dempsey, but for heaven's sake--for the sake of our New Mexico boys who are in the uniform of our countrydo not add weight to the dangerous isolationist views of this Steiner Mason by sending him to Congress." okay, kiddies. Your nickel will buy a bottle of pop for a while yet. The American Bottlers of Carbonated Beverages ended their convention without acting on the hotly debated issue. But they weren't happy about it. And Alvin G.
Beaman of Nashville, assuming the presidency, predicted the industry cannot stick with its nickel price. He said equipment prices have risen 70 per cent since 1939 and payrolls and other operating costs have gone up too. Sidney W. The suspension is in accordance with orders of the Civil Aeronautics Board. Pioneer has provided service over the route since June 1, 1948, but on April 4.
1949, the CAB proposed that Pioneer suspend the service. Pioneer asked a year's extension of the segment at a hearing in Austin July 18-22, 1949, but on Sept. 1 this year, the board said the route should be abandoned because of the lack of public support. Candidates Slip Up On Expense Reports Bu Associated Press SANTA FE. Nov.
election candidates rushed today to file campaign expense statements with the secretary of state. All but a few Democratic candidates failed to meet yesterday's deadline for filing a preliminary report on campaign expenditures. Failure to file by the deadline is a violation of the State Election Code, carrying a fine of up to $500. But Attorney General Joe L. Martinez said the candidates would not be held responsible in this case.
Error in Printed Forms He said a widespread misunderstanding of the law developed because of at error on the printed forms distributed by the secretary of state for the expense statements. The forms said the statements were due Nov. 17, 10 days after the election. However, although the law for primary elections gives candidates until 10 days after the election, to file the statements, the for general elections demands a preliminary statement no less than five days before the election. Handful File Reports A handful of candidates filed statements yesterday, including those who found out about the error in time to whip up a statement and get it into the secretary's office before 5 p.m.
Other candidates were urged by Martinez to file their statements as soon as possible. He said a court decision in 01942 held that candidates should not be prosecuted except for "willful failure" to file. The staff of the attorney general yesterday notified both Republican and Democratic headquarters of the error. Martinez Slips Up Martinez himself was among the delinquents. His office gave this explanation: Martinez, who has been busy with his campaign, assumed his staff was handling the report.
His staff assumed that Martinez was handling it. Candidates must file a second expense statement after the election, some time prior to the meeting of the State Canvassing Board Nov. 20. Candidates whose preliminary statements were received before the deadline yesterday were: Beatrice Bassett Roach, Democratic candidate for secretary of state, $300. Second 1 Report Due Robert Castner, Democratic, candidate for state auditor, $300.
Henry G. Coors, Democratic candidate for the Supreme Court, $315. Edwin L. Swope, Democratic candidate for judge of the 2nd Judicial District, no expenses. John E.
Miles, Democratic candidate for governor, $889.33. Tibo Chavez, Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor, $8. Eugene Allison, Democratic candidate for corporation commissioner, $280. Guy Shepard, Democratic candidate for land commissioner, $479. GI Bill Veterans Must Report Call to Duty Bu International News Service WASHINGTON, Nov.
The Veterans Administration asked World War II vets receiving benefits under the GI Bill of Rights today to notify VA immediately on recall to active military duty. Benefit payments include both subsistence allowances and compensation for service-connected disabilities. Under the law, these payments stop once a veteran goes back into uniform, VA explained.
